GRANVILLE, Ohio– In front of an energetic Senior Day crowd, the conference-leading Denison field hockey team defeated Transylvania University 10-0 to move to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The Pioneers dropped to 0-13 on the season and 0-10 in league play. Senior midfielder Emma Gebhart led the Big Red to victory, scoring a season-high seven goals across the four periods.
Transylvania held Denison scoreless for nine minutes before Gebhart scored her first of seven, putting Denison down 1-0 heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter, Gebhart scored her second goal of the day on an assist from fellow senior Lila Smith. Three minutes later, first-year Maggie Lamb gathered Smith's second assist of the game to put the Big Red up 3-0. Twelve seconds later, Denison's leading scorer Gebhart deflected a slip pass by Lulu Keil into the back of the Pioneers' cage.
Denison began the second half up 4-0 and didn't let up on its offensive pressure, scoring four in the third and the final two in the fourth. Gebhart opened the second half similarly to the first, adding two more goals. Her fourth of the day came from a solo shot, while her fifth was assisted by Keil. Also scoring in the third were junior Maddie Gaines and first-year Sienna Seyferth. Gaines scored her first goal of the season, while Seyferth tallied her first career goal as a Big Red.Â
Up 8-0 heading into the fourth quarter, Denison's offense slowed slightly, and it put its final two goals in the back of the Pioneer's cage in the last three minutes of regulation. Gebhart scored two emphatic goals, assisted by Lamb and Keil, to put the Big Red up 10-0.
Denison outshot Transylvania 32-1, and held a 13-to-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Big Red defense had a slower afternoon, keeping most of the Pioneers' offensive possession in the midfield and giving up just one penalty corner. Junior Therese Lucian tallied her eighth blank sheet of the season, which ties her career-best total. Denison continues to balloon its assist record, adding seven more assists to bring its season total to 49. Gebhart's seven goals are a career best, bringing her season total to 25 and her career total to 71; both are five goals away from breaking the program records.
