GREENCASTLE, Ind.- For the first time since 2018, the Denison field hockey team finished the regular season undefeated in conference play, after defeating the DePauw Tigers 1-0 in overtime. The Big Red improved to 14-2 overall and 10-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers dropped to 9-6 overall and 7-3 in league play.Â
In the regular-season finale, Denison and DePauw played tight defense in the midfield, creating few chances for either team to get on the board. After a slow first half, the Big Red increased its pressure on the Tiger backline, forcing three of its eight penalty corners in the second half. Despite their offensive efforts, the DePauw Tigers continued to stifle the Big Red, forcing the top-seeded Denison into just its second overtime this season.Â
The Big Red were relentless in overtime, putting up another four penalty corners in a span of seven minutes. Forcing the Tigers to play on its heels, with just two minutes left in the first overtime, from about the 30 yards out, senior Tabitha Chandler launches a ball into the arc, and it lands just in front of Lulu Keil, who quickly spins and sends a rocket into the back of the Tigers' cage for the golden goal.
Though Denison scored only one goal on the day, the Big Red dominated the Tigers, outshooting DePauw 16-1 and holding an 8-to-2 advantage in penalty corners. Today's victory was the team's 10th shutout of the season, and ninth for goalkeeper Therese Lucian, a personal best.Â
