GRANVILLE, Ohio- Denison field hockey advances to the NCAC Championship game for the fourth consecutive year, after defeating No. 4-seeded DePauw University 3-0 at home. The Big Red extended its win streak to 15, notching its 11th shutout of the season. Denison improves to 15-2 and is set to face conference rival Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, November 7, at 2 p.m. in Granville. The Tigers wrapped their season with an overall record of 9-7.
Denison put pressure on early, needing just two minutes to find the back of the DePauw cage. The Big Red were able to quickly push up their defensive line to the midfield, and senior defender Tabitha Chandler sent a long ball down the middle of the field to the feet of Lulu Keil, who spun past her defenders for an emphatic first goal.
The Big Red held its 1-0 lead through the second half, and in the 23rd minute, first-year Maggie Lamb went from the top of the arc and sliced through the Tiger defensive line for goal number two.
Though the Tigers were down 2-0 at the half, DePauw found its rhythm in the third quarter, forcing six penalty corners for five shots in 10 minutes. Denison kept its composure throughout the flurry of offensive looks by the Tigers and, with five minutes left in the quarter, senior defender Claire Willoughby connected with Keil. Despite Keil's initial shot being saved, she stuck with the play and sent the ball right back at Colby Durbin for goal number three of the day for the Big Red.
The two teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter, giving the Big Red a definitive 3-0 win after just five days before going toe-to-toe with DePauw in its 1-0 overtime win. Denison outshot the Tigers 16-8, with a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. In penalty corners, the Big Red held a small 8-6 edge over DePauw. In the cage for the Big Red was junior Therese Lucian, who tallied four saves and recorded her 10th shutout of the season.
