COLUMBUS, Ohio- Battling the heat and humidity of an early September season opener, the Denison women's soccer team fell to Capital 2-1 to kick off its 2026 campaign. The Big Red move to 0-1, while the Comets pick up their first win of the season.
Denison struck first in the teams' first match of the season. With just under four minutes into the first half, senior midfielder Mara McGlone found the back of the Comet's net following a quick reset of the field after a Capital goal kick. The Big Red would hold the Comets scoreless for the remainder of the half, putting up eight shots while holding their opponents to just two.
Capital came roaring back in the second half, forcing an own goal by Denison, followed by a quick second goal a minute later to take a 2-1 lead with over 40 minutes to play in the second half. Unfortunately for Denison, the 11-to-6 shot advantage in the second half wasn't enough to even the score in the end.
Denison would finish the match outshooting Capital 19-8 and tallied 11 corner kicks while giving up just two on the other end. In goal, Caroline Hague finished the evening with one save, after facing eight across regulation.

Denison continues out-of-conference play and returns to Granville, Ohio, on Friday, Sept. 4 for its home opener, where the Big Red will play host to Otterbein University at 7 p.m. inside Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
