GRANVILLE, Ohio - Denison field hockey defeated Centre 3-0 on Sunday to cap Denison's Family Weekend at home. The Big Red scored once in each of the first three quarters, finished with a 21-4 shot advantage, and limited Centre to just four shots in the fourth quarter. Denison moves to 6-2 in the season, while the Colonels drop to 4-4.
The Big Red finished with 21 shots and 15 shots on goal while holding Centre to four shots, all on goal. Centre's goalkeeper made 11 saves, and the visiting Colonels added one defensive save; however, Denison still found the back of Centre's cage three times, including once on a penalty stroke. Denison's junior goalkeeper Therese Lucian was in the cage and saved all four shots for her second shutout of the season.
In the first quarter, Reilly Desmond scored at 4:19 after a quick slip pass by Maddie Gaines to Emma Gebhart was deflected toward Desmond for goal number one. The Big Red kept the offensive pressure after the goal, producing four more shots in 40 seconds to close out the first quarter.
Lulu Keil scored at 22:11 in the second quarter, giving the Big Red a 2-0 advantage. Denison also earned two penalty corners in the quarter and forced two crucial saves from the Colonel's goalie in the final minute before heading into the half up by two.
In the 37th minute, Maggie Lamb converted a penalty stroke, giving the Big Red a definitive 3-0 lead in the third quarter. The Big Red generated another chance shortly after on Lulu Keil's penalty corner, but Centre goalie Eliza Hensley emphatically saved Gebhart's shot on goal.Â
The Big Red kept Centre off the board in a scoreless fourth quarter, with Lucian recording four saves to close out the defensive effort. The Denison tallied six penalty corners and seven shots in the quarter. In the end, the Big Red outshot the Colonels 21-4, earned 11 penalty corners and gave up none on its defensive end.
