LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Denison University volleyball program received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association for their work during the 2023-24 academic year.
This marks the fifth-straight year that the DU volleyball program was honored by the AVCA with the Team Academic Award, which is sponsored by Intel.
The Big Red were one of 51 NCAA Division III programs to be named to the 2024 Team Academic Honor Roll, which represents the top 20 percent of team GPAs from each division.
This marks the sixth time in seven seasons under head coach
Carter Cassell that the Big Red have earned the honor.
The award, initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. It is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honors. More than 1,400 teams received the AVCA Team Academic Award sponsored by Intent. This marks the second year that a recorded-setting number of collegiate and high school volleyball teams earned the award.
Denison finished the 2023 season with a 10-18 overall record and a 3-4 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Four student-athletes earned All-NCAC honors including returners
Claire Hamilton,
Cailey Johns and
Alice Kempf. Hamilton, a rising sophomore, collected Second Team honors. Johns and Kempf picked up Third Team accolades.
The Big Red will open 2024 at the Mount Union Invitational on Aug 30-31. Denison will play matches against Carnegie Mellon, the host Purple Raiders and the University of Rochester.
