Big Red Outlast Tigers in 2-1 Win

Granville, Ohio - Denison got off to a hot 2-0 start to propel them to a big 2-1 win over Occidental College on a late Friday night in Granville. Eli Taylor and Emmett O'Brien both scored in the first half to give them the early lead, while the Big Red defense held strong to prevent the Tiger comeback. Denison moves to 2-0-1 on the season, while Occidental falls to 1-2.

The Big Red got on the board first, just four minutes into the game. Junior midfielder was deep in the goalie box when the Tigers' Alex Yu fouled MacDonald hard, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Stepping up to take the penalty was senior Eli Taylor, who coolly scored inside the penalty box, just four minutes into the first half. After an acrobatic save from sophomore Alex Provost in the net, the Big Red were set up for a corner, which junior Kaden Kist delivered a beautiful dime to Emmett O'Brien, who headed it in to put the Big Red up 2-0 midway through the first half.

The Tigers would strike back, netting their lone goal of the match in the 43rd minute, giving the Big Red a slim 2-1 lead heading into the break. Provost recorded five saves alone in the first half, while the Tigers led in shots 8-3.

With the second half underway, both squads would exchange shots, as Kist had an opportunity in the 55th minute but was saved. Provost kept busy in the box, saving two shots with quick hands to keep the Tigers at bay. Controlling the pace and playing phenomenal defense towards the end, the Big Red were able to hang on for their second win of the season, 2-1.

Taylor and O'Brien scored their first goals of the season, while Kist recorded his first point. Taylor scored the 14th goal of his career, with O'Brien's being his fourth. Provost had a busy day in the net, saving eight shots. The match proved to be chippy, with Occidental receiving three yellow cards to Denison's two.
