Granville, Ohio – After a three-hour weather delay, the Denison Big Red women's soccer team battled No. 15 Johns Hopkins to a 1-1 draw on a Saturday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium, with junior midfielder
Josie Russell scoring a dramatic equalizer in the 81st minute.
Both teams played a scoreless, tightly contested first half, with each side generating a handful of chances but neither able to find the back of the net. The deadlock continued deep into the second half until Johns Hopkins broke through in the 81st minute, as Inara Inesi finished off an assist from Irene Sanchez Burgueño to put the Blue Jays up 1-0.
The Big Red answered almost immediately. Just 44 seconds later, Russell settled a feed from senior defender Reily Brinley, who tucked it just inside the right post to tie the match at 1-1, sending the Kienzle-Hylbert crowd into a frenzy. After both squads failed to score in the final minutes, the Big Red and Blue Jays tied 1-1.
Denison finished with the edge in shots, 9-6, and a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Hague made two saves to help preserve the tie for the Big Red.
With the result, Denison moves to 2-1-1 on the season, while Johns Hopkins moves to 2-0-2. The Big Red hit the road next, traveling to face Baldwin Wallace University on Sunday, September 13, at 1 p.m.
