GRANVILLE, Ohio- Denison field hockey moves to 1-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play after defeating the College of Wooster 8-1 at home. Leading the Big Red to an emphatic win was first-year Maggie Lamb, who recorded a four-goal haul. Denison moves to 2-2 for the season, while the Fighting Scots drop to 1-3.
A flurry of goals opened the first quarter, with Wooster striking first to take a 1-0 lead just a minute in. Unfazed, the Big Red answered 20 seconds later: Lulu Keil moved the ball down the field, then found Emma Gebhart inside the Fighting Scots' arc, who slipped a ball past Wooster's goalie to knot the game at one. Five minutes later, Keil connected with Gebhart again for goal number two of the night, to put Denison up 2-1. In the eighth minute, Keil extended the lead to two off a pass from Carter Davis.Â
Up 3-1 at the start of the second, the Big Red's Keil and Lamb helped Denison pull away, scoring four more goals before halftime. Lamb scored not only her first career goal as a Big Red, but also recorded a hat trick all within the second quarter.
The two teams were quiet in the third quarter, with neither team scoring across the 15 minutes of play. Denison would tally its final goal in the 46th minute, off a beautifully pulled slap shot for her fourth goal of the night.
In the cage for Denison, Therese Lucian tallied one save, thanks to her backline's stifling defensive efforts. Denison held a 30-to-3 shot advantage and fired off eight penalty corners, while giving up none in their defensive end.
