FOND DU LAC, Wis.- Thanks to a late flurry of goals in the fourth quarter, Denison field hockey defeated Marian (Wis.) 6-3 on the road. The Big Red moves to 3-2 for the season while the Sabres drop to 2-2.Â
In front of a Marian Homecoming crowd, the Sabres found the back of Denison's cage first and held a 1-0 lead for about four minutes before the trio of Emma Gebhart, Lulu Keil, and Reilly Desmond answered. In the sixth minute, Keil pushed a pass to Gebhart to tie the game at one apiece. Five minutes later, Keil tallied her second assist of the game after she found Desmond at the edge of Marian's cage, giving the Big Red a 2-1 lead.
Keil and Gebhart tacked on another goal for Denison nine minutes into the second quarter, holding its two-goal lead until the final minutes of the third quarter when the Sabres cut the Big Red's lead by one.
Up 3-2 heading into the final frame, Denison found itself knotted up at three with Marian with over 14 minutes left in regulation. Staying calm with time winding down, the Big Red scored three more goals in a span of three minutes to put the game away. Keil put in the game-winning goal after Megan Edwards gathered a ricocheted shot off the post and slipped a pass to Keil. Two minutes later, Maggie Lamb connected with Edwards for the fifth goal of the day. The final goal was another Keil-to-Gebhart connection.
In the cage for the Big Red was junior Madden Phelps, who tallied one save on the day. Denison outshot Marian 15 to 9, with ten on target. The Big Red also held a 10-5 edge over the Sabres, which proved to be an important advantage late in the game.
