Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Golden Goal by Gebhart Gives the Big Red a Rivalry Win

GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Denison field hockey team remains undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference play after defeating league rival Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 in overtime. In front of a Family Weekend crowd, the Big Red capitalized on a player-up situation in overtime to notch its second NCAC victory of the season. Denison improves to 5-2 for the season and 2-0 in conference play, while Ohio Wesleyan drops to 7-2 and 1-1 in NCAC play.

The two teams spent much of the day in the midfield, making for a defensive battle across the four quarters of regulation. Despite the two teams being tied at zero apiece at the end of the fourth, Denison held an 18-5 advantage in shots and earned eight penalty corners throughout the day, while giving up just one on its defensive end.

The game's physicality led to a revolving door of subs for both teams, each looking for a spark to fire up its offense. Though neither team capitalized on offense, a clear shift in momentum followed the overtime break huddle for the Big Red. Starting with the ball and pushing into the Battling Bishops' final third, Denison got a huge break when a green card was issued to one of Ohio Wesleyan's defensive anchors. With the two-minute penalty winding down and the ball restarted on the far right side of the field, Maggie Lamb pushed it to Lulu Keil, who swept past the Battling Bishops' defense to find a wide-open Emma Gebhart for the golden goal.

In the cage for Denison was junior Therese Lucian, who finished with two crucial saves and earned her first shutout of the 2026 season. The Big Red's defensive line and midfield pressure gave up just one penalty corner throughout the afternoon.

Up Next for the Big Red:
