Men’s Tennis Starts Strong in First Competition of the Year

Box Score Granville, Ohio - The Denison men's tennis team opened its fall season with a dominant showing at its own Denison Invitational, winning 37 of 48 matches across three days against a field that included Kenyon, DePauw, Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon.

The Big Red went 23-10 in singles and a near-perfect 14-1 in doubles over the weekend, losing just one doubles match in 15 tries.

"I thought it was a good weekend for us," said head coach David Schilling. "We have a very inexperienced but talented team this year, and it was great to get so many matches against some of the best teams in the nation. It was a lot of fun to see some of these guys get significant playing time and really step up with their opportunities. I also thought the team energy and camaraderie were great."

Denison set the tone Friday night with a perfect 11-0 day against Kenyon, sweeping seven singles matches and all four doubles. Nick Meyers opened play with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Alejandro González, and Mason Conlin, Chika Nwaozuzu, Aidan Borosko, Jackson MacTaggart, Arya Kallambella and Balraj Idnani each followed with straight-set victories.

Nwaozuzu and Kallambella were the weekend's standouts, each finishing 4-0 in singles. Nwaozuzu's signature win came Saturday morning in the longest match of the tournament — a 6-3, 4-6, 17-15 marathon over DePauw's Scott Anderson that required 32 points in the deciding tiebreak. He closed the weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Neil Zouaoui on Sunday.

Kallambella never dropped a set, rolling past Aditya Shah, Paul Castleman, Sree Kondaveeti and Carnegie Mellon's Jayden Yu. Borosko added a 3-0 singles weekend of his own, including a 6-4, 6-4 win over Case Western's Nikhil Ramani.

MacTaggart went 3-1 with wins over Rishi Palle, Jonah Ng and Yu, while Meyers and Conlin each posted multi-win weekends.

In doubles, the pairing of Kallambella and MacTaggart went 3-0, and Meyers and Nwaozuzu won all three of their matches together. Tom Suedmeyer and Ishwar Idnani went 2-0 on Sunday, and Balraj Idnani and Minato Koido added a 2-0 mark of their own.

Koido also delivered one of the weekend's best individual efforts Sunday, outlasting DePauw's Viktor Ronnberg 7-6(5), 7-5 for his first singles win of the fall.
Denison's 37-11 overall mark led the field. Case Western Reserve finished 34-23, Carnegie Mellon 15-9, Kenyon 8-23 and DePauw 8-36.
